KMCC outgunned
Bishop Thornton went into this game with the reputation as both division 2 high fliers and low sports - as the game progressed it was apparent that both titles were well earned. KMCC won the toss and elected to bat in the hopes of securing a huge total with which to defend and despite the loss of Harford-Cross in the first over steady progress was made against the most probing attack faced to date the big Cheese in particular looking to be in fine fettle. Wickets fell steadily at the other end each time seemingly as KMCC was forcing their way back into the game. It was after 35 overs that controversy struck - with the score on 100-6 Peter Raistrick, who had been held up by a road traffic accident arrived at the ground only for the Thornton captain to insist that he could neither bat nor bowl (in total contravention to the rules and more importantly the spirit of the game) fearing that a reasonable stand with the still present Fettes could help to keep KMCC in the match. Unfortunately, neither umpire knew what he was doing and were favouring the Thornton appeal which brought about a mid pitch conference between the Fraser twins, the umpires and Thornton players. The situation was not satisfactorily resolved however and an unnerved Fettes holed out a few balls later for 67 - at which point their main objective was achieved and amazingly they decided Peter could bat after all - pure gamesmanship and totally out of order. The KMCC innings came to a close on 125 all out.
The Thornton innings opened and interspersed between a few fine shots by Peter Sowray a spell from Fraser and Raistrick in tandem saw the ball swinging and seaming but not finding the edge or the fielders and although three late wickets fell to add respectability Thornton cruised home. With a bit of luck this fixture will not be repeated in the near future.
