KMCC tear up the form book
KMCC fielded a severely weakened side in which at the start it was thought that only 8 players were available - however the arrival of Bernard brought a rousing cheer from the assembled squad, sureley a sign of desparation. Aided by the fielding of wedding supporters, from the Peacock and Raistrick clan Staveley were kept to a meagre 100-0 from the first 18 overs of the game. Wickets from Fraser and Buckton however stemmed the flood and after the top 4 were removed the torrent turned to a trickle and finally a dryed up creek as the Staveley tail failed to capitalise on such a whirlwind start, only 16 from the final over enabled them to creep past 200 when surely a League record score was on the cards.
KMCCs morale was then boosted furthur as Captain Shedley, inspired by press pictures of him caressing the ball through the covers, led from the front and reached fifty before Iain had passed into double figures. Just as it all looked so simple 3 quick wickets appeared to swing the game in Staveleys favour. The scoreboard read 110-3 with Blackburn and Harford-Cross at the wicket knowing only Kitching, Buckton, Boynton and White remained. A partnership of 72 runs in the following 12 overs brought the game back to within reach however a second flurry of wickets including Blackburn,21 and Harford-Cross,71 left KMCC requiring 11 runs with Buckton and Boynton at the wicket. A couple of lusty blows by Buckton then brought the scores level, however Boyntons departure brought Bernard to the crease with 2 balls to survive or 1 run to win. A few heart stopping moments later Buckton struck the winning runs and Kirkby were on the way to the pub knowing they had just pulled off the unlikeliest of victories
