Ten man Kirkby rekindle survival push
Following the gut wrenching defeat of the previous week at the hands of Killinghall and lacking 4 bowlers (Goldsmith, Kirk, Armer and Blackburn - all injured) and a batsman (Brownlee - in a maternity ward) from the usual starting line up it was more in hope than expectation that ten man Kirkby took to the field instead of the sofa that the rest of the nation was ensconced at for the start of the World Cup. Skippered by Brad for the first time this season, he refused to bowed by pessimism despite a comfortable 70 run opening stand by Pateley in which neither batsman appeared troubled. Brad called on Kirkby's go-to man of the last 45 years and threw Rod into the attack immediately reaping rewards with a quick wicket. When part time seamer Kiffer Nattress (3-55) despatched Pateley's Aussie via a sharp catch by Duncan for only one suddenly the mood of the Kirkby team changed. Fielding like rottweilers backing up the Kirkby attack in which Fielder (3-39) also excelled Pateley were restricted to 208-9 at tea and only passed the 200 mark due to a spirited ninth wicket stand.
The kirkby run chase started brightly and despite the exit of Harford-Cross,17, Nattress(49) and Fielder(48) looked to be cruising right up until the moment of controversy that tainted an otherwise good spirited match. Kiffer, caught on the boundary from a no-ball, unaware of the call started to walk - the Pateley fielders whipped off the bails and appealed for a run out. The umpire unaware of the laws of the game then gave Kiffer out and it was only the intervention of the Fraser twins that persuaded the embarrassed Pateley skipper to atone for the umpires error by withdrawing the appeal. Once Nattress had redonned his pads he returned only to be despatched again LBW by the same umpire who was obviously offended by his presence on the pitch. Despite this blow and three further wickets later Atkinson, 20 and Briscombe,17no set up Shedley to strike the winning runs and secure KMCCs second victory of the season.
