Masham crumble to keep KMCC hopes alive
If ever KMCC needed a morale boosting victory over local rivals and long time members of the Nidderdale League elite, Masham then this was the day. On an intensely hot yet overcast day Brad was relieved to see the coin land heads up and insert MCC on an uncustomarily green looking wicket at the MCG. When he then tossed the ball to Duncan, the younger of the Fraser twins, little could he have known the fireworks about to be released as Duncan picked up four quick wickets in consecutive overs. This included dangermen Rob 'Hollywood' Smith, on this occasion more Waterworld than Citizen Kane and Dion Wood. At the other end Goldie beat the edge of innumerable occasions and was rewarded by the dismissal of Simon Yates, a long time nemesis of KMCC. All this time opener, A Smith, watched the procession as Masham slumped to 31-5. Kirk and Armer then joined the party as wickets continued to fall and when Fraser returned to take the ninth wicket (95-9) the game looked up for Masham. Just when the final pair of Chapman and Smith were beginning to make KMCC look jittery a moment of controversy overtook events, Duncan bailtopped Smith who was out by several yards having been backing up outrageously all day. Although given out, the appeal was withdrawn in the name of sportsmanship, no matter, Chapman fell LBW next ball and Smith was able to carry his bat for 54 as Masham were all out for 113.
Despite more jitters following the debacle at Ripley the previous week and a couple of quick wickets the steely nerve of Iain Fraser, 24no and Alan Brownlee, 39no ensured the KMCC ship was steered safely to the victory target with 8 overs and 6 wickets to spare. A vital win to keep KMCC out of the relegation zone with some tough fixtures on the horizon.
