Galphay crumble under the KMCC machine
KMCC notched up their first double over Galphay since entering the second division, however the match was not quite as plain sailing as the final margin of victory (96 runs) would suggest. Shedley won the toss and as usual elected to bat, and after the initial shock of losing a wicket second ball of the match, Rodney and Mark appeared to be cruising putting on 70 in the first 17 overs. However, like an old VW Golf, the KMCC innings continued to misfire after the loss of Fettes,50, Pickles, Dujon and Atkinson in quick succession, the score reaching at 109-5 after 22 overs. Some careful batting by the Fraser twins (Iain being the elder by only 5 years) took the score to around 150 before wickets started to be haemorraged once again, Steve johnson bagging a pair against his former club. In fact it was left to Shedley batting at the unaccustomed position of no.11 to strike a couple of fours from the last over, ensure a point and take the final total to 179-9, maybe 20 short of par. Iain was left stranded on 39 not out.
The Galphay response however never got going and some tight aggressive bowling by the opening pair of Gough (Duncan) and Caddick (Tufnell) kept the score down to 30-1 off the first 15. Equally miserly were the first change and as the pressure told the Galphay innings creaked, cracked and finally caved in on itself. Fettes, surely Nidderdale player of the month, claiming 5 wickets and KMCC new boy Richard "the General" Hinchliffe bravely overcoming lack of oxygen due to the rarefied atmosphere, and severe gout (brought on by several Cubans smoked at tea) also took 3 wickets. The Galphay innings closing on 83 all out.
Special mention must also be made to the efforts of Willy Pickersgill - after striding out to the crease he decided the best approach was to put keeper Dujon off his game and immediately made a protest by pulling away from the strike complaining of chatter - although amazingly it was the only ball of the innings so far where no words had left the keepers lips. Having achieved his task of upsetting the ebullient keeper, Willy chipped the next ball to Shedley and left the field happy with his days work!
