KMCC shine in the sun
The KMCG was once again the picture of a rural idyll for the visit of Burton Leonard, the sun shone, children played happily on the edge of the pitch and the outfield resembled a bowling green. Burtons decision to bat first was thrown into disarray following an eventful first over from the wily Peter Kirk, still smarting from the brutal axing of his Uncle Rodney minutes before the game. His two wickets including a juggled effort by dazed keeper Nattress which was eventually grabbed by Hooks at first slip sent Burton to Plan B as centurian Eustace, fresh from his heroics of the previous week, set about rebuilding the innings. Eustace fell on 32 following the introduction of the Richard “Elmer” Hooks and at 80-5 the Burton faithful were fearing a rapid demise. Kirkby failed to press home the advantage however and Sullivan, 32, threatened not only a few slates but also the welfare of a flock of sheep in an adjoining field as he assaulted the previously dominant Kirkby attack. Carter at the other end playing in more orthodox fashion moved serenely to 55 in a partnership of 66. Mike Armer finally broke through and his 3-35 inspired the collapse of the Burton innings as the final 5 wickets fell for only 18 runs. BLCC 164 all out at tea.
The Kirkby innings started slowly as bowlers Jankowicz and Sullivan gave the top order an examination in the art of playing pace bowling. Gun Bat Ken “Maverick” Fielder, passed with flying colours as he started to dominate the attack only to fall on 41 following the introduction of the spin of Birtwhistle. By this time however Chris “Iceman” Nattress, 76no, had recovered from his previous nights ad hoc camping expedition, and was timing the ball well as he guided Kirkby to a comfortable 6 wicket victory with 6 overs to spare.
