Kiffer inspires KMCC to much needed victory
The venue for this key game in the ongoing battle for superiority between the clubs in the second tier of division one was a wind and rain swept Bishop Thornton. With no protection from the elements the wind howled over the ground blowing away the sightscreen before even a ball had been bowled. Duncan showing masachistic tendencies won the toss and decided he wanted to stand in a gale for 45 overs. The KMCC attack was blown off line by the wind with the honourable exceptions of Peter Kirk (2-31) and latterly Mike Armor (1-51) as the Thornton top order steadily compiled the groundwork for a considerable total. New hope was kindled, when Armer finally uprooted Thorntons Aussies middle stump to make it 136-2 and PK removed the skipper in the following over but it proved a false dawn as the KMCC fielders shivered and bungled around and Thornton took full advantage smashing the ball to all parts and in the process taking 69 from the final 5 overs. 229-4 at tea looked to be and was a challenging total.
The KMCC innings got off to a flying start thanks primarily to the inform Kiffer Nattress and when he was joined at the crease by Brownlee a partnership of note kept the runrate down to manageable proportions. Brownlee, 61, was unfortunate to be given out LBW with the match swinging in Kirkby's favour at 156-2 however the momentum was not lost thanks to Kiffer, who was finally dismissed on 91. There was still some work to do and it was left to Armer and skipper Fraser to eke the remaining runs and secure a magnificent victory with four wickets and 7 balls to spare. A timely result given the calibre of the opposition in the upcoming couple of weeks.
